The BBC Micro was the first to host one of the all time greats of 80's computer gaming - the role-playing trading game "Elite" (YouTube video) But due to the the failure of the US BBC Micro market and other expensive R&D projects, Acorn found itself in a dire financial situation, and in early 1985 sold a 49.3% stake to Italian computer company.. In the early '80s, around 30 independent computer manufacturers could be found in Cambridge and the surrounding area. One of the best selling computers of this time was the BBC Micro, designed and manufactured by a small Cambridge company called Acorn. Chris Turner was Acorn's chief engineer at the time.

This particular BBC Model B computer was my very first computer. High-res photo available. It was manufactured on the 31st of October in 1983 and is 38 years old. It was bought by my parents as a joint birthday and Christmas present for that year from Debenhams on "The Moor" in Sheffield. This is the computer that allowed me to travel the stars.. The BBC Micro, launched in 1981, was at the centre of the BBC's original UK computer literacy project. Most schools in the UK had at least one BBC Micro and television programmes like The Computer Programme and Micro Live spread its influence beyond the classroom and into people's homes.
